AINTREE’S UNAFFILIATED SHOW JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS
If ‘mother nature’ thought she was going to prevent finalists attending Aintree International Equestrian Centre’s unaffiliated show jumping championships by covering the north-west region with a thick covering of snow, she was sadly mistaken.
Organisers at the Merseyside racecourse received a capacity entry, as junior and senior riders braved the snow flurries, and travelled from as far a field as Yorkshire, and Anglesey to contest their respective championships.
With rug, rosette, sash and a Fearns Farm Equestrian and Country voucher to the value of £50 going to all the winners, down to a £20 voucher down to sixth place in all championships, every final was hotly contested from start to finish.
First champions of the day was Jasmine Watts and Drifter, who stormed home to win the 70cm junior novice final. Sarah Chadwick and Diamond Lady (26.24) took an early lead in the marathon jump, but 12-year-old Jasmine certainly pulled out all the stops, and Drifter answered every call to break the beams in 25.43.
Jasmine has represented the West Lancs County Pony Club in many show jumping and mounted games competitions, and she also won the 2009 Church Farm Derby with her 13-year-old Irish bred pony.
Jasmine and Drifter were also contenders in the following 80cm junior intermediate championship, but the top spot here went to West Lancs Ince Blundell Pony Club member Daisy Adamson riding her fantastic all rounder Jigsaw Puzzle.
Daisy certainly threw caution to the wind over the twisty jump off course, and her aptly named Welsh piebald pony matched her determination stride for stride, the pair finishing fractionally ahead of Heather Twist riding Sox.
Like the previous winners, Daisy and Jigsaw Puzzle have also represented their Pony Club branch in team competitions. Daisy’s 17-year-old pony has proved a brilliant all rounder, competing in showjumping, dressage and eventing sections.
The final junior champions on the day, were Lily Callan and Interstat, who headed the 90cm junior open final. Eleven jumped clear in the first round to contest the timed jump off, and it was a particularly good turn to the final line that sealed victory for Lily and her Irish bred Interstat, the pair finishing ahead of Carmen Edwards riding Lulu.
Fifteen-year-old Lily was awarded the most improved show jumper of 2009 at her local pony club, and Interstat is a six-year-old Irish bred sport horse by Master Imp.
Senior classes were also hard fought throughout, and winning the 75cm senior novice title were Andrea Broome and Sophia.
Jackie Pope and her Connemara x Irish Draught partner Woodstock had set a stiff target, but Andrea was not to be denied, and  Sophia put the class beyond reach with a brilliant run to the last.
Ben Tinsley and Chilly proved hot stuff in the following 85cm senior intermediate. The pair were a mere blurr across the arena as they twisted, turned, and galloped from start to finish. Ben never took a pull throughout their round, and they finished ahead of Kate Tomlinson riding Crazy Diamond.
The final championship went to Janine Greenhalgh and Sonique who gained a 1sec winning margin to clinch the 95cm senior open title ahead of Sue Dyas riding Mulligans Dolly. Although Danielle Perez made a spirited challenge from last draw riding Cassimera, they had to settle for third.
The qualifying rounds and championships received great support from Fearns Farm Equestrian and Country, Tynllwyn Tack Shop, Youngs Animal Feeds.  Feedback from competitors was all positive, and the 2010/2011 series is eagerly awaited.
